It is with a heavy heart that I report to you that Larry Harmon passed away this past Friday night, September 23rd. Larry’s wife Mary, and his two sons were with Larry when he died. Indiana Soccer will mourn the loss of an amazing friend of the Indiana Soccer family. Larry was deeply involved in soccer for over 20 years. His first experience was in 1985 when like many of us, he started coaching recreational soccer. He coached recreational soccer for eight years and at the more competitive level for five additional years.
Larry served as the Indiana Youth Soccer Association president from 1993-2000 and chaired the Indiana Soccer foundation from 1995-2000. Larry received the Mike Vogel Humanitarian Award in 1997 from the North Central Soccer Club of Indiana. In 2000, he was inducted into the Indiana Soccer Hall of Fame.
Larry was extremely influential in the development of the 21 field Lawrence Soccer Park and in bringing three major national events to Indiana. He was instrumental in obtaining a construction grant, obtaining on acre of land, and constructing the Indiana Soccer office building on the Lawrence Soccer facility.
Larry, was an incredibly passionate soccer enthusiast whose tireless service to the game of the soccer went well beyond Indiana’s boarders!
Larry served as US Youth Soccer's Member at Large from 2000-2007. He also served as the Local Organizing Committee Chair for the 1996 US Youth Soccer National Championships as well as the 1988 US Youth Soccer Region II Championships. His service was honored by US Youth Soccer by renaming the D.J. Niotis Cup for the Under-16 Boys National Champion to the Larry Harmon Cup.
Larry also served on the United States Soccer Federation Board of Directors as a Youth Representative from 2000-2006 and was on the Women's Development Committee from 1996-1998. Additionally he served on committees such as U.S. Soccer's Project 2010 and the Project Gold Task Force to help provide guidance for U.S. Soccer's future. Larry was also a recipient of the most coveted honor of being a Life Member of the U.S. Soccer Federation
Larry acted as Chair of the MLS Indianapolis Bid Committee, General Manager of the Indiana Blast and Indiana Blaze, President of the Northeast Youth Soccer Association, chairman of the U.S. Open Cup Local Organizing Committee, member of the White River Park State Games Hall of Fame, President of the Lawrence Soccer Corporation, and Committee Co-Chairman of the Pan American Games.
Indiana Soccer’s Executive Director Dave Guthrie (who followed Larry into the office as president of Indiana Soccer from 2000-2006), stated that “Larry Harmon established a course for the organization nearly 20 years ago that continues to benefit the Indiana Soccer Family. Larry’s insight and council will be greatly missed. The Indiana Soccer Family will remember, and be eternally grateful for the significant contributions of Larry Harmon.”
Information on Larry’s memorial service has not been made available. Once details have been received, they will be made available to the Indiana Soccer extended family.
Very Respectfully,
Dave Guthrie, Executive Director, Indiana Soccer Association.
