Referee Award Looks to Help Rising Referees

Angelo Bratsis (1942-2021) is a refereeing legend in the United States.  A past recipient of both the Eddie Pearson Award and FIFA Special Merit Award, his list of on-field accomplishments remains unequaled.  He was a member of the FIFA Panel of International Referees for 12 years beginning in 1980, and represented the United States in 13 countries on 4 continents.  Along the way he refereed more than 130 international matches, including 25 class A matches.  During his career he refereed in no fewer than five professional leagues.

Beyond refereeing excellence, Angelo was instrumental in building the instructional program for the Federation.  He was on the National Assessor staff for over 30 years, and the National Instructional staff for more than 40.

It has been in this capacity that Angelo had an immeasurable effect on Adult soccer in this country.  He was a constant presence at training events and tournaments every year, guiding young referees as they sought their own level of excellence.  He served as Coach and Mentor to literally thousands of referees at the Amateur level from all across the country.

The Angelo Bratsis Award honors an official that has demonstrated dedication, perseverance and high moral character, which were qualities Angelo always looked for in an official.
